mutantplantduck: (blah blah blah)
Mun Name: Kabby

Other Characters: n/a

Name: Dr. Reginald "Reggie" Bushroot.
From: Darkwing Duck
Appearance: He's the one with the beak.. The shade of green is inconsistent.
Age: Eehhh, presumably an early/mid thirtysomething.
Gender: Male

Personality: Bushroot is very, very shy. He's become bolder since taking up the role of supervillain, but at his core? He's still the awkward, fumbling scientist he always was. While he stands up for himself against good guys and civillians, that has more to do with the mentality that he is a "bad guy" and so is supposed to. Among other villains, he's more of a doormat, though he will speak up if plants are being endangered by his colleagues. Also, as mentioned, he's awkward. He just doesn't know the proper things to do socially, 90% of the time, and one gets the feeling (and some canon evidence) that he was lonely even before he experimented on himself.

Yes, Bushroot is indeed lonely. And he will bring this up constantly. The idea of having a soulmate seems to be his driving force, but he's also been shown to be starving for friendship, as well. All he really wants is affection and positive attention; to be seen as the smart and sweet guy he is, or, rather, can be at times. But this seems to be how Bushroot always sees himself to a certain extent. Well, to clarify: Bushroot sees himself as someone capable of being lovable, but by definition of being a "mutant plant duck", he doesn't think he actually is lovable. He has convinced himself, and granted, not without the help of reality, that he can only be loved by someone else like him. However, he also believes he can only have friends who are like him. Bushroot truly believes he's "not evil, just misunderstood", and that he deserves the things he is fighting for.

He probably doesn't, though. Despite being pretty pitiful, Bushroot is capable of being dangerous. He murdered too former co-workers. These killings were fueled by years of teasing and being shown-up with flashier but less meaningful science and experiments, but what really pushed him over the edge was... Being embarrassed in front of a female scientist he was taken with. His priorities and reactions are skewed, simply put. Also, Bushroot is... Well, he's a bad guy. He's perfectly willing to hurt others who get in his way. Perhaps most telling, though, is Bushroot's tendency to be abusive towards the one being who does give him the affection and positive attention he's always after. Spike, Bushroot's pet venus fly trap(ish thing), is constantly being blamed and yelled at by the scientist. Bushroot can validate these traits all he wants, the point remains that he makes bad decisions and does bad things on a regular basis.

While it's not his main goal, but rather something of a rarity, Bushroot does have a side of him that's an activist. He's always cared about plantlife, but now that he's part plant? He can be very concerned about how plants, as a whole, are being treated. He'll put up a fight against companies cutting down trees and such, doing so in a villainous manner rather than through peaceful protesting, of course. That being said, he has no problem using plants for his own needs, although this may be because (it seems, at least) that he merely communicates with the plants rather than controls them, and they choose to obey him most of the time.

Bushroot is a coward. He can be brave when fighting Darkwing most of the time, but he's still a panicky guy -- in general, really, but especially when faced with physical danger. He's also highly intelligent.

Backstory: Once upon a time in the island-city of Saint Canard, there was a scientist at a highly respected college known. That would be Reggie here. Reggie had complicated relationships with his co-workers: Two other male scientists teased him, and his boss scoffed at his work. The only person nice to him was Doctor Rhoda Dendron, who Reggie was taken with. That's all important later.

Actually, the boss bit is important now, because the man cut Reggie's funding for experiments regarding plant life, and ultimately granting people the ability to survive on sun and water. Reggie was determined to keep working, though, and show that he was working on real, important science... So he experimented on himself, resulting in a transformation to a, to quote canon, "mutant plant duck". At first, all Reggie realized was the nourishment he got from the sun, and he rushed to tell the other scientists.

The two men mocked him again, and Reggie fled, humiliated to realize what he was in front of Dr. Dendron. He soon after realized he could communicate with plant life, and wondered if this would impress the others. He was discouraged, though, by the taunting... And so, despite being easily the most mild villain in the series, he kills them with his new-found powers.

Enter Darkwing Duck on the case, as Reggie -- after hearing of her fondness for him -- developed a plan to kidnap Dr. Dendron and make her a mutant plant duck as well, so they could be happy together. In the end, Darkwing foiled the whole thing before Dr. Dendron was mutated, and thus started Reggie's quest to find and/or create his soulmate.

That's the main running theme of the rest of Bushroot's appearances on the show, but he also teamed up with Negaduck, the Liquidator, Quackerjack, and Megavolt to form the Fearsom Five, and would sometimes go on crusades to make life better for plants.

Moral Standing: Neutral evil? Sort of? Chaotic neutral? It's hard to say. Reggie primarly does unlawful things because he either thinks they're morally right, or because Negaduck has him on a job and that guy is scary. Sometimes it's just to find his soulmate -- and by 'find', I mean 'make' -- though, so... It's hard to say. In canon, he calls himself, "not evil, just misunderstood".

Dreams: There really is just one. Oh, sure, knocking Darkwing out of the picture would be convenient, but Reggie doesn't really care about that much. No, Reggie's one dream is to find his soulmate.

Fears: Dying alone. Definitely dying alone. Or... Just being alone in general, really.

Extra: Plant powers! Primarily, he's really hard to kill off. He tends to just grow back; not sure how you guys want to handle that vs. reincarnation via the Well. Less problematic but more notable, he can communicate with plants. It is unclear if he controls them, or they just obey him by choice, but generally it seems to be the latter. That's what I'm going with. Other than that he doesn't really have much; he doesn't need to eat as long as he has water and sunlight, and he's also highly intelligent.

Character Location: The Greenhouse

Samples: part 1 and part 2 of "Slime Okay, You're Okay"
Writing Sample: Bushroot really needed to stop working with the Fearsome Five, he reflected -- not for the first time -- as he headed back after a defeat. Oh, sure, technically it had been Darkwing Duck who had beaten the team of villains, but Negaduck's punishment for a job poorly done was far worse than a puff of gas in the face. Besides, maybe if Quackerjack wasn't always so eager to jump into the fun, or if Megavolt could remember something, or if Negaduck did anything but shout and threaten, or if the Liquidator wasn't thinking business half of the time... Basically, if the other members of the team would just get their acts together, maybe they could've beaten Darkwing in the first place!

Although...

Bushroot sighed as he entered the greenhouse, ignoring the excited venus fly trap that came to greet him. He knew, deep down, that he wasn't without blame. He wasn't brave and brash like the others... Maybe if he was, he'd have better luck.

But that just wasn't who Bushroot was! ...Or was it? He'd never thought he was a murderer, either, or a villain at all. And now he was both those things.

"What am I doing with my life?" Bushroot asked no one in particular. "I never wanted it to go like this! I was just trying to help people!"

It was too late to turn around now, though. Bushroot knew that much. He was a wanted -- and hated -- criminal. He'd never turn over a new leaf. Maybe he'd never even find that perfect specimen to spend his life with...

"No!" He could let himself think like that. "No, I will find her! So what if I'm a villain? That shouldn't mean I have to be alone all the time! And I won't be..."

And with that, a new plan was on its way to being hatched.

(Aaand that's at least 300 words of new writing for the returning member bit!
